This digital void is compounded by an anticipated shortage of&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.who.int/health-topics/health-workforce#tab=tab_1">10 million</a>&nbsp;health workers by 2030, primarily affecting LMICs.

Given these formidable challenges, technology investments have become indispensable, with digital transformation rapidly growing within the healthcare sector to bridge this gap.

AstraZeneca’s Country-Specific Healthcare Initiatives

AstraZeneca has established the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.astrazeneca.com/partnering/a-catalyst-network.html">A. Catalyst Network</a>&nbsp;to pursue global health equity. This dynamic and interconnected global platform comprises over 20 health innovation hubs, blending physical and virtual partnerships.&nbsp;

These partnerships aim to address pressing healthcare challenges, boost affordable access to healthcare, and enhance patient-enabled innovation.&nbsp;

AstraZeneca also proudly aligns with the World Economic Forum's EDISON Alliance, striving to catalyze digital inclusion by delivering affordable solutions.

A milestone in this endeavor is the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.weforum.org/press/2021/09/edison-alliance-members-commit-to-improving-1-billion-lives-through-affordable-digital-access-to-healthcare-finance-and-education-by-2025/">1 Billion Lives Challenge</a>, wherein AstraZeneca has pledged to screen five million patients for potential lung cancer by 2025. The initiative leverages a partnership with Qure.ai, a leading health-tech firm specializing in AI-based interpretation of radiology images.&nbsp;

This AI-powered approach, geared towards early lung cancer detection, is remarkably impactful given&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.weforum.org/press/2021/09/edison-alliance-members-commit-to-improving-1-billion-lives-through-affordable-digital-access-to-healthcare-finance-and-education-by-2025/">the preponderance of lung cancer worldwide</a>&nbsp;and that lung cancer services in LMICs are often inadequately financed by government health schemes.

Qure.ai's AI-enabled chest X-ray tool qXR --which identifies lung nodules in less than a minute-- is a crucial element of this effort. Introducing this tool into primary care settings, where X-rays are most frequently employed, dramatically minimizes the potential for undetected lung cancers. 

The partnership has conducted approximately 85,000 scans across 21 countries, with a 0.9% identification rate for high malignancy-risk lung nodules.

Additionally, AstraZeneca has initiated collaborations to address nation-specific healthcare needs. In India, for instance, the company is working to enhance care for cardiovascular diseases, a&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanhl/article/PIIS2666-7568(21)00080-5/fulltext">leading cause of death</a>&nbsp;in the country.

In collaboration with Tricog, a provider of AI-based cardiovascular diagnosis tools, the India Health Innovation Hub launched Project Heart Beat in 2020. This project employs AI to interpret electrocardiograms (ECGs), facilitating early diagnosis of heart attacks in areas with limited healthcare resources.

Digitally-Inclusive Efforts to Boost Global Health Equity: AstraZeneca's Collaborative Endeavors

As India grapples with various health challenges, technology is becoming a vital bridge between healthcare providers and patients, notably in remote and underserved communities. This was the focus of the recent panel discussion during the Lakshya – Sampoorn Swasthya Ka, where key players in the health tech sector shed light on the ongoing transformations.

Neeraj Jain, Country Director, India, PATH, acknowledged that while India faces a notable workforce shortage in the healthcare sector, technology can significantly accelerate access to healthcare. Mr. Jain highlighted the three pressing concerns – lack of awareness, access, and proper health services. 

The COVID-19 pandemic, he added, underscored the importance of health awareness even at the grassroots level.

He emphasized that telemedicine can broadly address the access issue, particularly for the rural population. 

The government's telehealth platform 'E-Sanjeevani,' utilized by roughly 1 lakh health and wellness centers and 12,000 hubs, has already facilitated nearly 65 million consultations in rural locales.

Dilen Gandhi, Regional Marketing Director of Reckitt (South Asia, Health &amp; Nutrition), highlighted the role of technology in disseminating vital health information to vast audiences, evidenced during the pandemic. 

Customizable messaging, he said, is another boon of technology, citing a targeted health and product information campaign for expectant and new mothers.

Shyatto Raha, Founder &amp; CEO, MyHealthcare, pointed to the success of digital technology in enhancing healthcare system efficiency. 

By collating patients' clinical data meaningfully, physicians can consult more patients. Similar successes were reported by startups introducing "point of care" devices for immediate blood test results.

Prashant Warier, Co-Founder &amp; CEO of <a href="https://qure.ai/">Qure.ai</a>, discussed the role of AI in healthcare, highlighting the company's success in creating AI algorithms to interpret radiology images within a minute at the point of care, reducing the typical 4-5 week wait period.

The WHO has endorsed Qure.ai's technology, which is currently utilized in over 700 hospitals across 62 countries, and has benefitted over 1.2 crores of patients.

The lack of hospital beds was addressed by Dr. Sangita Reddy, Joint Managing Director of Apollo Hospitals, who advocated for deeper incentives to increase the number of hospital beds. Apollo Hospitals' 'REACH' model aims to improve rural healthcare access and has urged investment in rural areas.

PLAN India CEO, Mohammed Asif, underscored the importance of technology in empowering frontline healthcare workers, enabling them to work with the latest knowledge and tools, such as mobile applications and tablets.

The panel also saw Nikhil Joshi, Co-Founder of Interaction Design Studio, Digital Jalebi, elaborate on digital tools, including virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), in providing healthcare workers with realistic, immersive experiences for tackling medical emergencies.

As India strides towards universal healthcare, it's clear that technology is a powerful ally that can help overcome numerous barriers and transform the nation's health landscape.

Qure.ai appoints Dr. Shibu Vijayan as Medical Director – Global Health

Leading health tech firm&nbsp;<a href="http://www.qure.ai/">Qure.ai</a>&nbsp;has partnered with Erasmus MC, University Medical Center Rotterdam, to launch the AI Innovation Lab for Medical Imaging. The initial program will run for 3 years and will conduct detailed research into the detection of irregularities by artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms for infectious and non-infectious disease conditions. The goal will be to understand the potential use cases for AI in Europe and provide guidance to clinicians on best practices for the adoption of the technology specifically for their requirements.

<a href="https://www.erasmusmc.nl/en/pages/about-erasmusmc" target="_blank">Erasmus MC</a>&nbsp;is recognised as a leading innovator in healthcare, pursuing excellence through research and teaching. It will run the Lab, conducting research projects using Qure’s AI technology. The initial research project will focus on musculoskeletal and chest imaging.

Qure.ai and Erasmus MC Launch AI Innovation Centre for Medical Imaging

The&nbsp;Institute of Human Virology in Nigeria&nbsp;<a href="https://ihvnigeria.org/" target="_blank">(IHVN)</a>&nbsp;has announced their partnership with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fujifilm.com/za/en/news/Fujifilm-TB-screening-Nigeria" target="_blank">Fujifilm</a>, the multinational medical imaging device manufacturers and Qure.ai, a global AI-enabled medical imaging solutions provider to use advanced technology to help optimize tuberculosis (TB) screening outreach in Nigeria. The partnership has enabled&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usaid.gov/" target="_blank">USAID</a>&nbsp;funded IHVN to deploy ultra-portable X-ray machines embedded with AI for active case finding in Nigerian rural communities.

TB is the&nbsp;leading cause of death in Sub-Saharan Africa (Nigeria inclusive) and the most common opportunistic co-infection alongside HIV.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fujifilm.com/uk/en/healthcare/x-ray/portable-x-ray/fdr-xair" target="_blank">Fujifilm’s Xair portable Xray device</a>&nbsp;powered by the Qure.ai’s artificial intelligence algorithm provides an ideal solution for rural mass testing programs, offering ultra-portability, high accuracy, and efficiency point-of-care diagnostic solutions.&nbsp;

Dr. Chukwuma Anyaike, Director and National Coordinator, National Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Buruli Ulcer Control Program – Federal Ministry of Health NIGERIA,&nbsp;said; “The successful piloting of the use of portable digital x-ray from Fujifilm with Qure Ai technology by IHVN in collaboration with NTBLCP, Federal Ministry of Health Nigeria has proven its positive impact on case detection of tuberculosis."

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is working with IHVN to rapidly increase the level of TB cases detected and treated in Nigeria over the next five years. The project aims to improve access to high-quality, patient-centric treatment for TB, including drug-resistant tuberculosis and co-infections with HIV, which is common in the community. The project also covers contact tracing of TB presumptive cases to curb contagion and bring more cases under the aegis of the national TB reporting system. IHVN is the implementing partner for the project that covers the states of Lagos, Osun,&nbsp;<a></a>Ogun,&nbsp;and Oyo.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Fujifilm FDR Xair is a battery-powered, ultralight, and compact X-ray device that can function for hours without electricity. FDR Xair, coupled with Qure.ai’s Al-powered radiological image analysis allows for accurate screening &amp; detection of lung irregularities, and presumptive TB even in the remotest parts of the world and can be beneficial in&nbsp;<a></a>expediting the process of&nbsp;TB diagnosis at the point of care.

Qure.ai adds Impact Investor TEAMFund LP to its Series C funding round

The&nbsp;<a href="http://www.cidrz.org/">Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ)</a>&nbsp;announced its partnership with Qure.ai, a leading health-tech firm that builds artificial intelligence (AI) powered medical imaging diagnostics solutions, to implement comprehensive tuberculosis (TB) screening in Zambia. The project will have Qure.ai’s AI-enabled computer-assisted detection software, along with its lung health management platform, to evaluate chest X-rays and identify presumptive TB patients.

Supported by the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cdc.gov/">U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (</a>CDC) through a cooperative agreement with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.crdfglobal.org/">CRDF Global</a>, Qure.ai working with CIDRZ, will integrate its lung health suite – qXR, AI-enabled chest x-ray solution along with qTrack, a comprehensive case management platform to help optimize radiology workflows in 7 hospitals in Zambia.

CIDRZ CEO, Dr. Izukanji Sikazwe&nbsp;said&nbsp;“CIDRZ welcomes this partnership as the qXR solution will contribute immensely to Zambia’s stride to ending TB by the year 2030. With use of the qXR solution for Chest X-rays, we anticipate an increase of TB detection and monitoring in the various health facilities in the country”.

The sites include Kanyama, Chawama, Matero, Choma, and Kafue General Hospitals, Monze Mission Hospital, and Livingstone University Teaching Hospital. The project will launch across these seven sites, with a mix of analogue and digital X-rays used to screen for TB presumptive cases.

Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ) Partners with Qure.ai for TB Screening

<a href="https://unilabs.co.uk/">Unilabs</a>, the leading diagnostic services provider, has announced a partnership with Qure.ai, a market leader in medical artificial intelligence (AI) solutions. Through this partnership, Unilabs will be deploying Qure.ai's AI solution to aid in the classification of chest X-rays into regular and irregular exams. Unilabs signs on Qure.ai for triaging chest X-rays

MUMBAI: When Covid-19- the newest public health emergency-hit Mumbai, the BMC did more than roping in contract doctors, buying medicines and setting up field hospitals. It used the modern medical tool of artificial intelligence (AI) to track the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

A year later, it decided to use AI to combat one of the oldest scourges-tuberculosis. Between January 2021 and January 2022, it screened chest X-rays of over 14,000 people, using a special software that in three minutes diagnosed presumptive TB in a patient.

BMC executive health officer Dr Mangala Gomare said, “AI has been beneficial because it tells us in three minutes whether an X-ray scan is conventional (i.e., without worrying markers). TB suspects are quickly identified, put through other confirmatory tests, and started on treatment.”

Warier said 20-30% of the total TB patients in Mumbai last year were such “incidental” findings.</a>

AI has been around in medicine for a few years in the form of robotic surgery, virtual assistants linking doctors and patients, e-radiology, among others. The appearance of Covid-19, however, cemented AI into public health.

When the pandemic started in March 2020, the BMC deployed Qure.ai’s software at 15 sites, including Covid centres and mobile screenings in slums. RT-PCR kits were not easily available at this juncture, forcing doctors to depend on AI-supported X-ray.

The Central TB division has recently asked districts to screen 3,500 presumptive suspects for every 1 lakh population. “With the CTB and the goal of TB elimination by 2025, AI screening strategy will help,” said Dr Gomare. Already, 9 TB clinics at civic hospitals have got the AI software.

NGO PATH’s TB technical director Shibu Vijayan said it tested the Qure.ai software in Nagpur in 2017. “We were finding 20% extra cases,” he said, adding the software would be rolled out in 10 other states in India. Internal medicine specialist Dr Swapneil Parikh said, “However, AI is only a tool and its usefulness depends on how well it is used. You have to use AI in conjunction with a doctor. It isn’t a cure-all.”
